Must-See Movies Starring Real People

Finally, movies that don’t include vampires, wizards and superheroes. Two movies that opened Friday feature good story lines and real characters to love or hate.

The first movie, Pitch Perfect, is about a female college a capella group vying for cred on campus and a national title. The girls selected for the group have nothing in common except their love for singing, but they can’t get it together because their leader is stuck in Old Skool mode.

She is constantly at odds with Beca (Anna Kendrick,) the main character, who really wants to be a DJ and joined the group after her father suggested she get involved in campus life.

Finally, they recognize what each singer brings to the group and change their tune, so to speak, going into the final competition. Pitch Perfect demonstrates what teamwork can accomplish. It is heartwarming, entertaining and inspirational.

The second movie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, is set in high school in the not so long ago 90s. The main character, Charlie (Logan Lerman,) is a shy 10th-grader with mental problems. Two seniors befriend Charlie and teach him how to love, loosen up and have fun. He eventually confronts his past and begins to heal.

Anyone who has ever felt like an outcast will love this film. It shows that if you want to make friends you must let people know you’re interested in them; you only need a few good friends to make high school bearable; and true friends stick with you no matter what.

When my daughter saw a trailer for this movie, she vowed not to see it because she thought the movie wouldn’t be true to the book, which was a popular young adult novel. I haven’t read the book, but I loved the movie. The characters were flawed, believable and human.

I’ve been waiting months for these movies. It was a double treat getting them the same weekend, but I wish the studios wouldn’t release all the good movies in the last months of the year.
