Challenge Yourself This Month

By Cheryl Mattox Berry

Although February is the shortest month of the year, you can still get a lot done. This is the perfect time to start a personal challenge, a one-person contest. A month may seem like eternity when you’re trying something new, but 28 days (even fewer now) are doable.

The challenge can be something you’ve needed to do but have put it off for one reason or another. It works like this: Each week you set a goal, such as completing a certain number of things. Reward yourself with something small if the goal is met. A big reward awaits you at the end of the month if you’ve met your goal each week.

If you don’t have a challenge in mind, here are a few suggestions:

Fitness Challenge. If you’ve always gone to step class, why not create a cross-training program that includes spinning, zumba, pilates and kickboxing. Confusing your muscles may just be the boost you need to burn calories and lose a few pounds.

Nutrition Challenge. Eliminate the junk food from your diet, and eat more fruits and veggies. Shop with your mother and ask her to buy a few new items each week. Eggplant and zucchini may not taste so bad in the right recipe.

Academic Challenge. Hit the books and try to pull up your grade in each class. It can be done, but you’ll need to stay off social media and spend a few extra hours studying.

Reading Challenge. How many books from your favorite author do you think you can read this month? For a change of pace, check out other authors of the same genre.

Swearing Challenge. Let’s face it, some of you have a potty mouth. Can you go an entire day without cussing? Think of funny, oddball words to replace cuss words. If a bad word slips out, pay a fine. Ask friends to hold you accountable and select someone to be the bank. You still get a reward if you win or lose this challenge.

Hopefully, your personal challenge will go beyond February, and you’ll incorporate some of the things you’ve done into your regular routine. Now that you know that trying something new isn’t difficult, you can start a personal challenge whenever you feel like you’re in a rut.
