Hurricane-Ravaged Haiti Needs Help

By Cheryl Mattox Berry

Opportunity abounds for community service projects to benefit Haiti in the wake of destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, which killed 54 people on the island. Haiti is reeling from Tropical Storm Isaac in August and a huge earthquake in 2010 that caused major damage to homes, buildings and the infrastructure.

Although foreign governments and aid groups pledged to help rebuild the island, progress has been slow, and the needs are great. Authorities say Hurricane Sandy damaged crops and could increase the number of cholera cases and water-borne illnesses. The hurricane made a bad situation worse.

Here is a chance to start a community service project that will bring immediate relief to an impoverished country and satisfy one of your graduation requirements. Some suggestions:

  1. Adopt a school
  2. Sponsor an orphanage
  3. Clothing drive
  4. Toy drive
  5. Collect medical supplies
  6. Food drive
  7. Skate-a-thon, Dance-a-thon or You-Name-It-a-thon
  8. 5k race/walk
  9. Neighborhood garage sale
  10. Pumpkin or Christmas tree sale

You can select one or more of the above. Better yet, come up with your own idea. To make the campaign more successful, partner with local businesses. Being associated with a charity event is not only a good thing for businesses; it raises their image in the community. Churches and synagogues are other sources for donations. Set up a table and pass out fliers about your activity. If you’re collecting items, decorate a big box for drop-offs.

Don’t forget to contact the media. Community service projects make good copy and video. You might attract more donations from people who see what you’re doing.

Before you launch your campaign, check with officials at the American Red Cross. They can tell you what is needed, where and the best way to transport items. All money raised should be given directly to the American Red Cross, which guarantees that the money is spent on the intended purpose. The American Red Cross also has fund-raising ideas on its website.
