Even the Quiet Ones Have an Opinion on the Presidential Campaign

Everyone has an opinion about the presidential campaign, and I’ve been saving mine for later. There are enough pundits – professional and armchair – without me weighing in this early.

The latest is the attendant at a thrift shop, where I recently dropped off a few items. I’ve been to this particular store about six times. The gentleman who takes my donations has said the same five words to me each time. “Need a receipt” and “Thank you.”

On this particular day, however, he was quite chatty and pretty much held me hostage giving me his take on Republican candidate Donald Trump. He was entertaining without realizing it.

He told me Trump’s wife is Mexican, and she has told him all about their culture, particularly how they sneak across the border. She now dislikes poor Mexicans because she’s rich and has turned Donald against them, too.

I really wanted to tell him that Melania Trump is Slovene-American (born near Sevnica, Yugoslavia, now called Slovenia,) and I doubt anything she said swayed Trump one way or the other. Besides, does he even listen to women?

I was itemizing my donations feverishly as the man reared back on his heels and editorialized in a low voice so that his co-workers couldn’t hear him.

A Haitian immigrant, he said Trump doesn’t like people like him, and there’s no telling what he might do to all immigrants if elected president. I agreed on that point but didn’t want to say anything to prolong the conversation. It was past my lunchtime, and my stomach was growling.

As I got in the car, I felt bad for not correcting him on Melania’s nationality and a few other things he said about Trump. But like I said, it’s still early in the political season, and I’m sure I’ll drop off another bag of stuff before the Democratic and Republican conventions.

I’ll make a point of eating before I go so that we can have a lively discussion. That is, if he says more than five words to me next time.

  1. Cheryl,
Anyone who believes Trump’s wife is Mexican. Is not worth the time it takes to form a sentence. Talking to him will give you a headache. Just drop off you clothes and keep on stepping.
