Shut Down Unnecessary Spending

The shutdown of the federal government for 16 days reminded us how resourceful we can be when money is tight or nonexistent. So, why can’t we continue to be frugal?

Here’s what I’m talking about:

Manicures and pedicures. Before nail salons popped up on every corner, we used to do our own fingers and toes, remember? It was my Sunday night ritual when I was in college. My friends and I also exchanged colors instead of buying new polish every week. You can save money and time, too, by doing it yourself.

Hair. Can’t you fix it or have a girlfriend hook you up every now and then? With practice and the right products, you can give yourself a salon look.

Smoothies. Personally, I like making my own smoothies because they taste better and have the thickness I prefer. Buy ripe fruit, juice and yogurt at the grocery store, throw it in the blender and voila, you’ve got a delicious, homemade drink. Plus, you’ve got leftovers to make yourself another one.

Salad. Same thing. Go to the store and buy all the ingredients. Wash the lettuce and place it in a Ziploc bag. It’s right at your fingertips when you want to eat healthy.

Movies. Netflix and Redbox rentals will save you a lot of money. Buy popcorn and candy at the store. Darken your family room and enjoy a night at the movies with family and friends..

Sit down and think of how you spend your allowance or money earned from a part-time job. You’ll be surprised how those standing appointments for hair, nails, etc., add up. Wouldn’t you rather spend that money on something big? If you have a school trip coming up, wouldn’t it be nice to have some extra spending money then?

Come up with ways to reduce spending, starting with the examples listed above. Put the money you save in a little glass jar. Keep a tally on your phone or computer with the item you want to spend it on in bold letters at the top. That should curb your urge to splurge.
