Take a Career Cue From Reality TV

By Cheryl Mattox Berry

Sometimes, it’s so easy to get caught up in other people’s drama that you forget about your life. Case in point: reality TV. The shows can be entertaining and addictive, for sure. However, there are some takeaways that you can apply to real life, especially when it comes to careers or launching a business.

Instead of coveting the lifestyle of a particular character or imitating her, become that person in real life. For example, if you like the talent shows, such as American Idol and The Voice, because you like to sing. Well, don’t just sit on the sofa and root for your favorite contestant, get out there and start singing before an audience. Join a chorus, form a group or get gigs singing at special events, such as weddings and bar mitzvahs.

Don’t confuse what NeNe Leakes does on The Real Housewives of Atlanta as real acting. If you want to become an actress, start performing at school. Also, audition for roles in community theater, where you can hone your skills in acting classes. If there’s a movie being shot in your area, sign on as an extra.

If you’ve got the flair to be a designer, start drawing couture today. Think of a catchy name for your company. Then, design it, sew it and wear it. You’ll get noticed and create a buzz. Don’t be shy about advertising your skills. That’s how you get business.

Use your creativity to launch other business, such as designing new uses for old furniture that may be sitting in your grandma’s attic or basement collecting dust. That’s what they do on Flea Market Flip.

The bottom line: Use reality TV as a springboard to your success. As a friend used to tell her daughters who loved watching videos of Destiny’s Child, “They got their fame and fortune. What are you doing to get yours?” That was a cue for them to turn off the TV and hit the books. Keep that question in mind as you tune in to the next episode of your favorite reality TV show.
