Create Your Dream Team

As football season kicks into high gear, everyone is rooting for her favorite team. It’s time to pick players for your team – The Dream Team.

You’ve heard the phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Well, it also takes a team to help you realize your dreams. These players will challenge you, chastise you and cheer for you, but they’ll always be in your corner. Here is the list of players for your Dream Team.

Spiritual leader and church/synagogue. You need to believe in a higher power and attend a house of worship. It grounds you, offers hope and provides comfort during troubled times. Attending a weekly service feeds your soul and prepares you for the week ahead. Church leaders are good sounding boards and provide counseling. Many churches award college scholarships and send care packages to students attending college away from home.

Mentor. This person will be your friend and trusted advisor. Count on her to keep it real when discussing your school work, social life, family, college and career choice. You might not like what she says but know that she has your best interest at heart.

Guidance counselor. If you’re planning to attend college, make friends with your guidance counselor. He/she knows exactly what it takes to get into your dream school. Don’t wait until senior year to pop into the counselor’s office. You should introduce yourself freshman year and visit often. Let your wishes be known so that you come to mind when opportunities arise.

Trusted Family Member. This could be an aunt, cousin or godmother. Choose someone who knows and understands the dynamics of your family and can advise you accordingly. You don’t want to make decisions in a vacuum. You may not be privy to certain information, but this family member is and could enlighten you.

Add a coach to your Dream Team if you play a sport or whatever players you think are necessary to help you achieve your goals. Some of the people you’ve chosen will remain in your life throughout adulthood; new team members will replace others. Having a team means that someone has always got your back.
